Jeongguk hears it before anything else. Beneath the ambulance’s shattering cries that grated on Jeongguk’s already fraying nerves.

Seokjin’s shallow breaths are growing father and father apart, and the two paramedics in the back with him haven’t done anything after putting the oxygen mask over his mouth.

“Why—” Jeongguk swallows, only now just realizing how dry his throat is. “Why aren’t you helping him? His breathing—”

The paramedics don’t move, neither do they speak.

Jeongguk has to swallow down the growl that threatens to rise, but he knows it’s futile. The fact that they’re in an ambulance itself is a miracle, especially with who Seokjin is. The paramedics are just for show.

He feels it next, the way their bond starts to crumble. His inner omega is uncharacteristically silent, and Jeongguk feels a part of him fade with the bond.

He squeezes Seokjin’s hand, pretending it isn’t limp and steadily losing its warmth.

“Seokjin-hyung,” he whispers. “Please.”

It’s an echo of his plea to the alpha only hours prior. Seokjin knew that what he planned to do was dangerous, and that the odds were not in his favor. The human side of the city had ramped up their security recently, and Jeongguk urged Seokjin and the others to let him bring all they needed until they could figure out how to better navigate the new protocols.

Seokjin simply gave him a reassuring smile, pulled him in for a kiss and promised to be back in time for dinner. The same dinner that’s now cold on their table, set moments before Jeongguk bolted out the door after sensing the moment everything went wrong on their bond.

He’d begged for this ambulance at the risk of his own status.

The same ambulance now carries them to the single hospital their sector has.

It’s usually impossible to get one in this sector, especially for an alpha like Seokjin. But Jeongguk has always been willing to throw away all pretenses of being human to protect his love.

He smells it last. Seokjin’s scent had already been bitter with pain when Jeongguk reached him and he was lifted into the vehicle. The bitterness gradually fades the longer they’re in the ambulance, and Jeongguk knows better than to hope when it sweetens into something familiar for the briefest moment. The sweet, familiar, scent evaporates right after, until Jeongguk is left with his own half of their combined scent, and something a little milky underneath.

The bond completely dissolves, and the residual warmth vanishes from the hand he holds. Only then does the ambulance pull to a stop, the siren abruptly shutting off. Jeongguk’s ears ring in the sudden silence, and he can’t bring himself to move from where he sits.

He jolts at the sound of the door opening, cold air surging into the back of the ambulance, pushing the paramedics into action. He stumbles out, still clinging to Seokjin’s hand as they wheel him towards the building bordering between the human side and moon-blessed. The paramedic in front of him turns, suddenly reaching for Jeongguk as they approach the doors.
