Namjoon whimpers when the first drop of rain hits his face. He glances around him, none of the buildings he’s walking past are decent enough for him to take shelter with the rain that’s building into a steady pour. He squeezes his eyes shut, exhales deeply before opening them and trudges forward.
His mind spins with the events of the day. It was doomed to be a bad day when he woke up late for his shitty job then got yelled at by his boss when he finally arrived. As if that wasn’t enough, the tasks he was given piled up, so much that he ended up staying late, much later than everyone else. It was starting to be a regular occurrence, his superiors giving him tasks they didn’t want to complete and leaving him behind at the end of the day. They would still take credit for his work too.
So, he’s here, walking home in the rain, because he didn’t look at the forecast before leaving in his haste, and didn’t grab an umbrella.
It sucks, because he loves the rain. But now, he wishes he was anywhere else.
A car speeds by, driving through a puddle on the road, and Namjoon bites back a sob as the water from the puddle hits and soaks him even more. He takes a shaky breath as a a few tears escape his eyes, and continues to push forward so he can get back home.
He hears the sound of another car driving by, drawing in his shoulders forward in anticipation of another splash. He frowns when he realizes like the car is slowing down, but continues to walk forward, even as he distantly hears the sound of a door slamming shut.
Suddenly, the cold rain drops are no longer falling on him, and Namjoon freezes midstep. He looks up with wide eyes to find an umbrella above him. It’s a familiar umbrella, the one he’d randomly gifted Taehyung, and his boyfriend treasured it greatly. He turns to look at said boyfriend, who is gazing at him with concern.
“Hyung, why didn’t you call?” Taehyung murmurs, bringing his hand up to cradle Namjoon’s face.
Namjoon leans into the touch, another tear slipping from his eyes. “It’s late… and I didn’t want to bother you… I know you have an early day tomorrow.”
Taehyung frowns, swiping the tears from Namjoon’s face with his thumb. “You know you’re never a bother, and I’d always come when you call.”
Namjoon’s eyes slip shut and he nods. It’s a simple thing, but he’s not used to being cared for, not like this. His last relationships had him giving more than anything, and he’d resorted to taking care of himself before he met Taehyung.
Meeting Taehyung, and dating him was surreal. Before they dated, Taehyung was someone that Namjoon believed was out of his league. But fate believed otherwise, and Namjoon met him when he had to fill in for one of his coworkers and accompany his boss to a meeting with Taehyung. Taehyung had approached him after, and gave him his card.
Even then, Namjoon had simply thanked him for the card and tucked it away. But Taehyung was persistent, and here they were, several months into dating. Taehyung used every opportunity to remind Namjoon he was loved and cared for.
“Let’s go, before you catch a cold,” Taehyung murmurs, hand slipping from Namjoon’s face, and taking his hand to lead him to the car.
“Wait,” Namjoon whispers, tugging on Taehyung’s hand as he turns towards the car. “Just—”
He brings one hand up to the back of Taehyung’s head, and pulls him in for a kiss. Namjoon sighs as warmth floods through him, distantly hearing the steady sound of the rain hitting the umbrella and ground around them. Taehyung hums into the kiss and gently squeezes his hand as they part.
“Better?” Taehyung asks, knowing.
