Seokjin glances over his shoulder, checking to make sure he isn’t being followed as he hurries through the dark. The last thing he wants is for his father, or any of the wolves on patrol to find him and prevent him from doing what he’s about to do.
With quietly determined steps, Seokjin makes his way through the forest, until he gets to an empty cave. After checking that he’s far away enough from pack grounds, he enters the cave. It’s deep, and a few steps inside reveal several halls. Seokjin feels a little relieved with the discovery — it will make it difficult for anyone if they try to come and find him.
He decides to go through one of the halls on the left, eventually coming to an empty room. Pausing in the center of the room, he takes a deep breath before pulling off his cloak and the bag hidden under it. Opening the bag reveals a few items including several large candles, a handful of matches, seven tangerines he’d grabbed from the pack’s meal hall, a bag of ground black tourmaline powder and a silver knife.
Seokjin kneels and pulls out the candles, carefully lining them up on one side of the room before taking the seven tangerines and arranging them in front of the candles. He then takes the bag of powder and carefully sprinkles it onto the ground in an intricate pattern. The full pattern forms a semi-circle in front of the candles and tangerines.
He exhales once he’s done, shifting back onto his heels to pull his shirt over his head. He’d only worn a large shirt under his cloak, knowing what the rest of this ritual would entail. Folding his shirt and setting it on top of his cloak, he moves them to another side, then pulls out the matches and silver knife from the bag. He places the bag next to his clothes and resumes his kneeling position in front of the candles.
With a shaky breath, he takes one of the matches and begins to light the candles with trembling fingers. It takes him four matches to light all the candles, and he blows out the last one once he’s done. Then, he reaches for the silver blade and pauses as he holds it up to the candlelight.
Are you sure this is what you want to do?
Seokjin ignores his inner alpha’s rumblings, bringing the knife down to rest the blade on his wrist. Not giving himself any more time to hesitate, he slices across his wrist and turns it as he stretches it out to let it drip over the powder.
Just as he brings his wrist to the end of the pattern on the ground, wind whips through the room and snuffs out the candles. The hairs on Seokjin’s neck rise and his inner alpha shifts, much more alert as he waits with bated breath.
The scent of tangerines bursts through the space, almost as if the fruit had been peeled and spread through the room. Sweet maple lingers just underneath the tangerine scent, which grows stronger with every passing second. It’s dizzying, and Seokjin suddenly feels very hot as the scent pulls at his senses with every breath he takes. He’s so captivated by the scent, he almost doesn’t catch the low growl that starts until its much louder.
He can’t place where the growling comes from. The throaty sound vibrates all around him, overlaying the scent to pull him further and further into a haze.
Seokjin finds himself turning his head, a gasp escaping him at the sight of two glowing eyes that pierce through the darkness. The growl grows even louder the moment their eyes meet, and Seokjin’s inner alpha immediately stands. Honey-orange eyes move closer, bringing the sound with it, and Seokjin is frozen where he kneels.
The tangerine and sweet maple aroma suddenly disappears and the growling stops, leaving Seokjin’s ears ringing at the change. At the same time, the honey-orange eyes vanish.
The candles burst into flame, relighting the cave room with a fire that seem almost brighter than when Seokjin lit them mere moments ago. The light reveals the man behind the presence in the room, and his tangerine and sweet maple scent slams back into Seokjin’s senses.
The man is shorter than Seokjin, but the power he holds is unmistakable. He stares down at Seokjin with his arms folded across his chest, wearing a plain white shirt, and black pants. His honey-orange eyes glow intensly, almost pinning Seokjin in place. His long, black hair seems to flutter with an unseen wind, and Seokjin is left breathless at his beauty.
This is an alpha. A formidable one.
